Morne Morkel resigns as Pakistan bowling coach

Former South African pacer Morne Morkel has resigned as Pakistan’s fast bowling coach, becoming the team’s first departure following a dismal ODI World Cup performance.

Morkel had only signed a six-month deal in June, with his first assignment in Sri Lanka for two Tests. He also managed an ODI series victory over Afghanistan, the Asia Cup and the grand finale in India, reports Live Cricket Score

Pakistan‘s pace department was severely hampered by Naseem Shah’s injury before the event, significantly blunting the attack. Shaheen Afridi finished with 18 wickets but had struggles with control and impact, particularly early in the innings. Pakistan’s pacers nevertheless took 50 wickets in this competition, trailing only South Africa and India. Still, their elimination from the tournament was due to a lack of consistency from the top order.

Pakistan’s board is expected to name a replacement for him soon as the team prepares for its next trip, a three-match Test series in Australia beginning on December 14.
