Bangladesh Ends 2024 on a High with Historic Test Victory in West Indies
Bangladesh closed out 2024 with a 101-run victory over the West Indies in the second Test, securing their first win in the Caribbean in 15 years. The triumph in Guyana levelled the two-match series 1-1 and marked Bangladesh’s third overseas Test victory of the year, following a historic 2-0 sweep against Pakistan earlier in 2024, reports Live Cricket Score.
The key to the win was an inspired performance by Taijul Islam, who claimed 5-50 to bowl out the hosts for 185 on the fourth day. However, the foundation was laid earlier by Nahid Rana’s five-wicket haul in the first innings, which helped Bangladesh gain a slim lead despite being dismissed for under 200. A spirited counterattacking batting effort in the second innings from Shadman Islam, Mehidy Hasan, and Jaker Ali ensured the visitors set a daunting target.
Skipper Mehidy Hasan, leading the side in the absence of the injured Najmul Hossain, credited a positive mindset for the victory.
“When we went to bat in the second innings, I told the batters that we had to be positive on this wicket because it’s tough to survive by just defending. We knew if we could put up 250-plus, we’d have a strong chance to win,” Mehidy said after the match.
With Mominul Haque sidelined by illness, Shahadat Hossain (“Dipu”) was promoted to bat at No. 3, which paid dividends.
“I told Dipu to play positively and allowed him to hit if the ball was there to be hit. His 28 runs were crucial. I batted with the same mindset because runs were crucial on this wicket,” Mehidy explained.
Mehidy, captaining for the first time in Tests, was satisfied with the team’s response.
“I feel good about winning this game, especially in the West Indies and as a first-time captain. Everyone played their part and supported me, which made this win possible. It was a tough challenge, but the players were determined to win and mentally ready to give their best,” he said.
Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed Shine
Taijul’s performance was pivotal on the fourth day as he quickly removed West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and later dismissed set batter Kavem Hodge (55). Joshua De Silva, leaving the hosts in disarray.
“I’m satisfied with my bowling because I delivered what the team needed. There were big expectations on me in the second innings, and Alhamdulillah, I delivered,” Taijul said.
Pacer Taskin Ahmed, a vital cog in the Bangladesh pace attack, shared the Player of the Series award with Jayden Seales. Taskin bagged 11 wickets across the two matches and played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s fightback after losing the first Test.
“This series was a big achievement because many top teams have struggled against West Indies in their conditions. I did my best in both games and being named Player of the Series is rewarding. Hopefully, there’s more to come,” Taskin remarked.
Taskin, who recently returned to Test cricket after a shoulder injury, expressed satisfaction with his recovery and hopes for continued success.
“I worked hard to return to Tests after my shoulder injury. It feels great to contribute, and I aim to achieve more in the future,” he added.
A Year of Mixed Fortunes
The victory helped Bangladesh move past a difficult phase that followed their series win over Pakistan. They had endured five successive Test defeats—2-0 losses to India and South Africa and a defeat in the first Test against the West Indies.
However, their ability to regroup and secure a historic win in challenging Caribbean conditions highlights the team’s grit and growing ambitions in Test cricket. With younger players stepping up and seniors leading by example, Bangladesh closed the year on an optimistic note, signalling brighter days ahead.
