Danushka Gunathilaka, a Sri Lankan international cricketer, was found not guilty of sexually assaulting a lady in Sydney last year while competing in the Twenty20 World Cup. On Thursday, a court document was revealed.
In November, Australian police accused Gunathilaka of four charges of sexual intercourse without the consent of a 29-year-old woman. According to the report, the alleged assault occurred after the two had communicated via a dating app for many days. Three of the four sexual assault allegations against the 32-year-old, who was suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket shortly after his detention, were dropped in May. He was only charged with “stealing” or removing a condom without consent during sex.
According to Live Cricket Score, the evidence proved that Gunathilaka had no opportunity to remove the condom because “that intercourse was continuous.” Prosecutors claimed Gunathilaka purposefully gave false statements during the police questioning. Still, the judge ruled that his answers were most likely due to “confusion, weariness, a language barrier, and possibly memory.”
“The accused answered every question asked of him in the interview, and I got the unmistakable feeling he was trying his hardest to be truthful and assist the authorities,” stated Judge Huggett.
